Gallery Syre’s first Youth Open Call, inaugurated on December 7th, was a tremendous success. The Gallery, which launched the Open Call last September for the first time, involved middle and high schools of Whatcom County. A jury of five art professionals selected the finalists, which are featured in the current exhibition at Gallery Syre in the Cordata neighborhood.

The theme of the open call ‘Wishes and Dreams’ has been interpreted in many different ways and it was not easy for the jury to nominate the three winners (Kayla Nygren (1st. Place) Emma Vande Voort (2nd place), and Jerusalem Sintayehu (3rd place). The opening reception was very well attended by the local community, and even more surprising, led to several sales.

While the main idea of this call and exhibition was to create a platform for local emerging talent without any financial objectives, it definitely represented a huge success- moment for the participating students. The Gallery is planning to launch another Open Call next year with the aim to offer opportunities to young students of Whatcom County and to reinforce the mission of the Gallery, being a place of encounter, gathering, and a catalyst for the arts.

‘Wishes and Dreams’ will be open to the public until February 27, 2020, during the regular gallery hours (Tuesday to Thursday from 12 to 5 pm, and by appointment).

Concurrently, the Gallery is showing also David Syre’s latest works, with a focus on smaller formats and a strive to explore new techniques. For more information, please contact gallerysyre@gmail.com or call 360-746-8745.
